The movement towards Open Science has progressed rapidly over the last few years with the need for the open sharing of research to address the COVID-19 pandemic and with major developments in Open Access and FAIR and Open Data. One of these developments has been the policy initiative called 'Plan S' by a group of research funding agencies which aims for full and immediate Open Access to research publications. Plan S will essentially require researchers on grants from these funding agencies to publish their research in Open Access journals. In this talk we will discuss in detail the guidelines of Plan S including the types of allowed Open Access routes and the rights retention strategy as well as the possible consequences for researchers.

Gareth is an expert on Open Science for the European Commission and Dutch Government and is a Plan S Ambassador for cOAlition S. He is also a researcher in theoretical linguistics at Leiden University, a member of the advisory group for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), and is a former president of the European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers (Eurodoc).
